MoMo – Chicken or Vegetable

Momo is a steamed dumpling filled with chicken, mutton, pork, beef, shrimps or even vegetables. The dish is believed to be of Tibetan origin through the influence of Chinese cuisine, and with time, has become traditional delicacy in Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan and North-East India. However, MoMo is by and large consumed in many countries. It is a popular street food across India.

Ingredients
  

For the Dough

  • 500 gms Refined Flour (Maida)
  • 1/2 tbsp Salt
  • 3-4 tbsp Refined Oil
  • Water For kneading

For the Chicken Filling (Chicken MoMo)

  • 250 gms Chicken (Boneless)
  • 2 large Onions Finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Paste
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Paste
  • 2 tbsp Soya Sauce
  • 3 Green Chillies Finely chopped
  • 1 bunch Coriander Leaves Finely chopped
  • Salt To taste

For the Vegetarian Filling (Vegetable MoMo)

  • 1 cup Carrot Grated
  • 1 cup Cabbage Grated
  • 2 large Onions Finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Paste
  • 1 tbsp Ginger Paste
  • 1 bunch Coriander Leaves Finely chopped
  • 1/2 tbsp Pepper
  • 2 tbsp Soya Sauce
  • 3 Green Chillies Finely chopped
  • Salt To taste

Instructions
 

MoMo Dough

  • Add 3-4 tbsp of oil and 1/2 tbsp salt in the maida
  • Now, knead maida into a dough with some water (similar to how we prepare roti)
  • Keep aside for 30 mins in a container and cover it.

Filling for Chicken MoMo

  • Wash chicken and cut into cubes. Put the chicken cubes in mixer and make a paste.
  • Now, take chicken paste in a bowl and mix it with chopped onions & green chillies, garlic paste, ginger paste, soya sauce, chopped coriander leaves and salt.
  • Keep aside

Filling for Vegetable MoMo

  • In a bowl mix grated carrots & cabbage, chopped onions & green chillies, pepper, soya sauce, ginger paste, garlic paste and salt.
  • Heat 1/2 tbsp oil in a pan. Put the ingredients in heated oil and fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Keep aside

MoMo Preparation

  • Take the maida dough and divide into small balls.
  • Roll the balls into thin circles of 3-4 inches in diameter.
  • Now, at the centre of the round, place 2 tbsp of chicken stuffing or vegetable stuffing based on if you are preparing chicken or vegetable momo.
  • Bring one edge together and twist to seal it. You can start pleating towards the other edge and slightly press together to make it shaped like potli.
  • Repeat this process for all the maida balls
  • Boil water in a steamer.
  • Grease the steamer plate with little oil and arrange the momos without touching each other.
  • Cover and steam for 15 minutes or until they turn soft and tender.
  • Your momo is ready.

Notes

Serve hot with tomato ketchup or green chilly chutney.
